My Marathon Journey 2015 Rochester Marathon
I had a very good friend tell me a quote before the race. He said: " Run the first 10 miles with your head. Run the second 10 miles with your legs. Run the last 6.2 miles with your heart." He was exactly right.
Father and son cross the finish line at the same time
The Journey...................
Let the training begin. January 2015 - Starting off with a fresh pair of training shoes. I personally seem to gravitate towards ASICs. They fit well and don't cause any foot issues.
Well.... I started the Training New Years Day, 2015. I walked 6 miles which includes 3 miles of the Erie Canal Path. It was a brutal cold night walk, but I really enjoyed it. The Canal is frozen but the path was clear and accessible. I will do this 6 mile route for about 4 months, many times a week, to lose the first 20 lbs, along with watching what I eat and comparing my BMI to my caloric intake. I will start running after that just as the winter weather is changing to spring. I want to be 170 lbs. on the starting line in September. This is very doable.
The weight is starting to drop off. January 1st to Jan 13, I am now rid of the 1st 10 lbs. to my goal weight of 170 by race day in September. So far I am feeling very good. I am so thankful for my life that I never smoked. My lungs feel so clear and fresh. I look forward to nutritious meals like this, packed full of energy. More to follow..........
8 miles today! overcoming a great distance in snow on railroad tracks in cold weather burns a lot of calories! There are no shortcuts to getting into shape. Real world hard work is the answer.

I decided to take the plunge into the world of fitness centers through my workplace this week. I get a personal trainer to help me with my goals. I think...in terms of getting in shape, one of the most important aspects of training is having accountability to someone. This keeps you in check. It is so easy to take the lesser path of resistance.... of just not exercising. This is not in my rule book. Special thanks goes out to my personal trainer, Joseph Emmel.

Let the marathon food process begin.... need lots of fuel for the training.....

In 5 months I will be in the best shape of my life.

April 28th 2015, at 51 years old, I made a decision to see if my workouts were paying off. I decided to get up, Carb-up, as we runners often say, and made a 10.1 mile run from my hometown of Albion to Point Breeze, Lake Ontario. I hadn't run this in 5 years. But I DID IT !!! These are times when I am glad I never smoked. My lungs are as clear now as they were at 18 years old. This is a good sign of things to come. If I can run 10.1 miles now, without stopping, I should be able to make the 26.2 mile journey 5 months from now at the Rochester Marathon. It was a great day!

This is great stuff. I have been using this product in my workouts and in daily work. You can get it at Wegman's. http://vegasport.com/
The ASIC Gel DS Racing Flat

Jim finds the perfect racing flat... I was so happy to get these. My first official racing flats !!! The ASICS® Gel DS Racers - The popular ASICS® GEL-DS Racer® is back after a three-year hiatus, better than ever at providing exceptional support for those who need a bit more, but who also desire a true lightweight flat for race day. The upper is stitched around a canvas or EVA board and directly attached to the midsole. The Solyte® midsole features enhanced cushioning and durability. Magic Sole™ vented midsole and outsole material minimizes weight and maximizes breathability. Racing Trusstic System® is designed for faster turnover. DuoMax® Support System is positioned to enhance support and stability. Wt. 7.6 oz. I can't believe how light they are. I have been training in ASICS so this is the perfect race day flat for me!
