WHAT IS CLASSICAL GUITAR?
What is Classical guitar? Although many people know about the guitar as it is presented by popular rock and blues musicians, the guitar has a long standing classical tradition. Although it boasts a broad repertoire of its own, the music of masters such as Bach and Mozart is alluringly interpreted on the guitar. Many children seem to be especially drawn to the sound. Classical Guitars have NYLON strings to keep with the classical tradition. NYLON strings not only provide wide pallet of beautiful sounds, but are also easier on young fingers. Special techniques of finger-picking are mastered along with producing the sound with nails.
ITEMS NEEDED FOR LESSONS:
-NYLON string guitar (*See special message below)
-A-440 tuning fork
- Music book and folder for holding sheet music and lesson material
-Extra set of strings
-Guitar Polish and cloth
-Notebook for lesson notes
-a good heart
* If you are considering lessons for you child, please email me first to ask about purchasing the appropriate instrument for lessons. "Steel" string guitars are not acceptable for classical guitar method.
Students must have a NYLON string guitar before starting lessons. Putting nylon strings on a guitar designed for steel strings will not suffice as a short cut to purchasing the correct instrument. The guitars sold in the TOY department at Walmart, Kmart and other box store retailers are not quality instruments and are very inferior to a proper instrument needed for starting guitar lessons.
A typical NYLON string "classical Guitar"
A typical classical guitar has six NYLON strings. NYLON strings produce a very beautiful tone. The neck is a bit wider than a steel string guitar and allows for a wider string spacing. This is to help accommodate the fingerstyle classical guitar method. It is usually un-amplified. The strings are tied onto the bridge. Classical guitars can range in price from just over a hundred dollars for a very basic student model to a range in excess of $20,000 for a professional hand made concert guitar. Most good student models with a solid top will be in the $150 - $500 range. Comparing price to studying other instruments, its a great bargain. It is better to purchase the best instrument you can afford, rather than taking the "I don't know if my child will take to the guitar so I will buy them this cheap model" approach. Good classical guitars for students are very re-sellable and a better playing instrument will encourage a child to play. Marcus Tullius Cicero
